Service of Tenebrae with Chorus Angelorum

March 26 @ 7:00 pm 8:00 pm

Chorus Angelorum, Chattanooga’s premier chamber choral ensemble, is proud to announce their upcoming service of Tenebrae in conjunction with Christ Church at 7:00 PM. We would be honored if you would consider sharing this free performance opportunity with your congregants and/or members.

The word “Tenebrae” comes from the Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows”. In another age, monks chanted the ancient psalms and lamentations in the darkness of night (Matins) or very early morning (Lauds). Traditionally held during Holy Week, Tenebrae services were used to commemorate the final days of Jesus Christ’s life on earth, including his crucifixion and death.

Throughout the service, the ensemble will offer a series of responsories, psalms, and motets that reflect on the readings and prayers of the evening. The service will be marked by the gradual extinction of candles symbolizing the fading of Christ’s light from the world, culminating in the “strepitus”, a loud noise symbolizing the earthquake at the moment of Jesus’ death. The last candle is not extinguished, but hidden, leaving the room in darkness.

The event is open to the public, and admission is free. A goodwill offering will be collected during the service to support the work of Chorus Angelorum. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the beauty and solemnity of the Tenebrae service performed by one of Chattanooga’s finest choirs.
